LGBT+ is an acronym generally used to describe “alternative” sexual identification. Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered, have been long identified as alternatives to heterosexuality. We add the “plus” because, like sexuality, it’s a fluid concept that changes as we discover more and more about human sexuality. The “+” sign is a symbol that acts as an umbrella for an emerging and changing gender or sexual identity that doesn’t necessarily fit into LGBT – but is still a legitimate, minority sexual orientation.

Not so long ago – we identified sexuality as pretty much binary… i.e. straight or gay. Thankfully -  these days there is far more tolerance and understanding around sexual identification which is no longer confined to being straight or gay…

Pansexual, Sapiosexual, Androgynous, Omnisexual, Asexual, Hermaphrodite and Questioning are some of the other minority sexualities that some people may identify with.

Whilst it’s really good news that LGBT+ has become so much more accepted in Australian society – it can also create problems for some in that there can be a lot of confusion about personal sexual orientation. Also – for the older generations and those from different cultural backgrounds or from families with strict religious expectations – there can still be a great deal of pressure to present as heterosexual and in some instances there can also be some stigma associated with alternative sexualities – making it difficult to openly be your true sexual self.

At Relieve Psychology we have seen clients with a range of sexual identity issues and have helped many clients, and their families, come terms with their true sexual orientation enabling them to live happy and fulfilled lives. We also provide relationship counseling for LGBT+ couples who may be experiencing difficulties in their relationship.

All consultations are confidential and you will be treated with care, empathy and respect.

LGBT+ Issues CounsellingAlthough a person’s sexual or romantic orientation or gender identity may not be a source of distress, people who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, asexual, or any other orientation or gender identity may find that the social stigma of living as a minority is a source of stress or anxiety.

When seeking therapy, whether for issues associated with one’s sexual, romantic, or gender identity or for concerns related to mental health, finding a qualified mental health professional who has experience and familiarity with the challenges members of the LGBTQ+ community often face can be critical to successful therapy outcomes.
